In operation since 2023, the student council at Rathbarry National School provides a valuable way for pupils to share their ideas, feel heard, and take an active role in school life.
It promotes student voice by giving children from 1st to 6th class opportunities to represent their peers and contribute to decisions that affect their school community.
The council encourages participation in school projects by involving students in planning events, improving the school environment, and supporting positive initiatives. Working together helps pupils develop confidence, responsibility, and leadership skills in a supportive setting. We have a 'Suggestion Box’ in reception where students can place their ideas and these are reviewed regularly by the student council in conjunction with our school principal Ms. Foley.
Including representatives from 1st and 2nd class ensures that views and ideas from pupils in the Junior classroom form part of the process, with the younger children on the council learning alongside and from older students in 3rd to 6th class. This approach fosters teamwork, mutual respect, and a strong sense of community, helping all children grow as active and caring members of the school.
This year our student council will also spearhead our Active Flag Team helping to co-ordinate and run initiatives as part of that project with the support of Ms. Hourihane and Ms. Harte.
The student council for 2025/2026 includes: Gearóid, Lilian, Oisín, Finn, Ruairí and Ted.
